Crowns, Bridges & Veneers

Crowns

Crowns (or “caps” as they are frequently referred to) are made of porcelain or metal. Crowns are often recommended if the tooth has had a large filling, has had root canal treatment, or has a broken cusp. Adding a crown offers protection by covering the entire tooth.

Crowns are typically done in two separate appointments. The first appointment, which can be longer, allows the dentist to replace any fillings if needed, and then shape the tooth to prepare it for a full coverage crown. A digital scan is then taken of the tooth and sent to the dental lab where they fabricate a custom crown to fit specifically to your tooth. A temporary crown made of acrylic is fabricated for the patient to have on for approximately two weeks until the permanent crown is completed at the lab.

A second appointment is then needed to remove the temporary crown and permanently cement the final restoration.

Bridges

A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge is fabricated by preparing the tooth or teeth on each side of the missing tooth/teeth for a crown. A digital scan is taken of the preparation and the dental lab then fabricates the final bridge, which is cemented on at a second appointment approximately two weeks later

Veneers

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are attached to the front of the teeth to improve esthetics. Veneers can be used to change tooth colour and shape.

Nitrous Oxide

At Brightside Dental Studio we have nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, available as a mild sedative to use during your dental appointments. Nitrous oxide is frequently used to ease mild to moderate anxiety and can help to reduce pain. It is delivered using a small mask (hood) that fits over the nose and it is administered for the whole procedure to provide a calming effect.

At the end of the procedure, oxygen is administered to reverse the effects. Laughing gas is commonly used for younger patients, but is also available for use by anyone who requests it.
